Food Allergy & Gastrointestinal Conditions
Do certain foods cause itching, swelling, difficulty swallowing, abdominal discomfort, reflux, diarrhea, constipation, or other recurring symptoms?
Food allergy, food intolerance, eosinophilic disease, celiac disease, and disorders of gut–brain interaction can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Careful evaluation can help avoid both missed diagnoses and unnecessarily restrictive diets.
Conditions we evaluate:
- IgE-mediated food allergy
- Food-induced anaphylaxis
- Oral allergy syndrome also called pollen-food allergy syndrome
- Alpha-gal syndrome
- Eosinophilic esophagitis
- Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome
- Celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity
- Food intolerance
- Functional heartburn
- Functional dyspepsia
- Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, diarrhea, or mixed bowel habits
- Unexplained food-associated symptoms
- Malabsorption concerns
Evaluation and treatment may include:
- Detailed food and symptom history
- Targeted skin or blood testing
- Supervised oral food challenges
- Elimination-and-reintroduction plans
- Emergency action plans and epinephrine education
- Oral immunotherapy for selected food allergies
- Medication management
- Coordination with gastroenterology and dietitians
